Joana graduated from Lisbon’s Faculty of Fine Arts and still works in the city, despite remaining based in her beloved Alentejo. Specializing in painting and needlework techniques, she is helping to preserve traditional crafts through workshops, in addition to selling her own creations — from tote bags to stuffed toys.

Since retiring from UNICEF, Carmen has dedicated most of her time to projects which shed light on the human lives and realities on the periphery of our awareness and concern.

Ginjinha Espinheira

Ginjinha Sem Rival

Historic Liquor Stand

This beloved liqueur stand opened doors in 1890. Having always remained a family business, serving successive generations of Lisboners for over 130 years, it’s earned a reputation as one of the two best-known cherry liqueur (ginja) stands in downtown Lisbon, and its inclusion in the city’s directory of historic businesses. Today, it is at risk of closing to make way for a high-end hotel owned by some German guy who lives in the Canary Islands. Figure me that.
