Tradition meets technique
Well before attaining her degree in Painting from the University of Lisbon’s Faculty of Fine Arts, Joana was already a seasoned seamstress and a faithful apprentice to her grandmother, who introduced her to styles and techniques not found in any books or manuals.

Today, she spends most of her time to working with textiles, putting a fresh twist into everything she makes, from tote bags and tablecloths to stuffed toys, scarfs, and socks.
A new approach to the old,
an old approach to the new
Joana’s style reveals a desire to blur the lines between art and artisanship, design and popular art, vintage and kitsch – in a constant, critical dialogue with the definitions of these terms in each piece she creates.

Knowledge, like happiness, is only real when shared
When she is not hard at work creating things, Joana often takes time to teach others her craft. She teachers workshops on cross-stitching and other techniques to everyone from complete beginners to experienced artisans.
